Cross-Country
Skis Rentals
and
Lessons at New
Germany State Park
Allegany Expeditions
Inc., locally owned by Mr. Darrell Spence, operates as a guide service
located near Cumberland, Maryland. AEI is now open for business at New
Germany State Park and the company will be offering cross-country ski
rentals and lessons. AEI is providing both touring skis and backcountry
ski rentals. AEI is conducting business in the Recreation Hall, located
next to the new warming hut by the lake. AEI will provide half of the
Recreation Hall as a warming hut with hot fires and picnic tables.
Cross-country ski lessons will be provided on Saturdays 9:30am and 1:30pm,
and Sundays at 9:30am. However, lessons can be scheduled for other times
by appointment. Private lessons can also be scheduled for groups and
individuals. AEI instructors are certified by the Professional Ski Instructors
Association.
According to Mr. Spence, "The newer, more modem skis, called the
mid-length ski, make it easier than ever to learn how to cross-country
ski. The shorter skis make turning and maneuvering effortless. The wax-less
skis with the omni track base make going up and over much simpler than
ever before." Because of the renewed interest in health and fitness,
cross-country skiing is now the perfect winter sport. Not only is the
sport inexpensive, it can be enjoyed almost anywhere and skiers do not
spend time waiting in long lift lines!
What are the advantages to XC-skiing at New Germany State Park? The
advantages are many. The first and most notable is the quality of trail
grooming provided by the Department of Natural Resources and the staff
at New Germany State Park. The trails are groomed daily with state of
the art automated grooming equipment to provide skiers with a fresh
trail everyday. New Germany State Park is nestled into a valley, protected
with large eastern Hemlock trees that not only create a shelter from
the wind but create a scenic beauty comparable to few places on the
east coast. New Germany State Park is a clean and well-maintained park
with friendly hosts and staff.
Allegany Expeditions Inc. is partnered with the Cross Country Ski Areas
Association, Professional Ski Instructors Association, Leave-No-Trace,
and the Department of Natural Resources Nature Tourism Program to provide
the park visitor with a quality skiing experience.
New Germany State Park is easy to find. Travel is on well-maintained
roads and is only 4.5 miles from U.S. Interstate 68. Travelers should
take 1-68 to exit 22 and then south onto Chestnut Ridge Road. Drivers
should continue on Chestnut Ridge Road until the road meets New Germany
Road. Turn left onto New Germany Road. Look for the park entrance on
the left. For more information, contact Allegany Expeditions at 1-800-819-5170
