Darrell Spence and friends founded Allegany Expeditions in 1988. It was their passion for the outdoors and the desire to share wonderful experiences with everyone that inspired the group to organize as premier outdoor guides. Coming up through the ranks in scouting and growing up in the outdoor experience, Darrell and his associates decided to share their enthusiasm, expertise and genuine interests with others.

Over the years, AEI has built a reputation for providing the ultimate outdoor experience. AEI has created quite a following of repeat customers include church groups, scout troops, families, and corporations. AEI is also known for its' availability to the beginner trying a sport for the first time. AEI caters to all skill levels. No excursion is the same, uniquely tailored to fit the needs of the participants. Many customers have said that even though the guides were present on the adventure, the participants feel a huge sense of accomplishment, that they did it all themselves, and that it is an experience like none other.

AEI is located in the western panhandle of Maryland, one mile outside the city limits of Cumberland. Just eight miles from the scenic Potomac River, AEI is at the center of numerous outdoor opportunities and adventure. Most of the activities offered are within a one-hour drive that includes fantastic scenic vistas, mountain views, meandering rivers, abundant hiking trails, and challenging rock formations above and below ground.

AEI is a special combination of spectacular outdoor environments, coupled with caring, experienced guides using modern equipment. The specific activities that are offered include: rock climbing, rappelling, caving, canoeing, fly fishing, bass fishing, cross country skiing, canoe rentals and ski rentals, and kayak instruction.
